God created everything for the purpose of glorifying Him. “. . . all things were created through him and for him” (Col 1:16b, ESV). As His Church, we know that our ultimate mission is to glorify Jesus and make Him famous. This is our deepest desire for Bethlehem, PA. In order to make Jesus famous, however, we must show the people of Bethlehem who Jesus is and how to follow Him (Acts 5:14).
Our mission: To make Jesus famous by creatively helping people become His fully devoted followers.
We know that we can only accomplish this through God’s power and by His Spirit (John 15:5). However, no matter how remarkable we make our Sunday services, the truth is, most people will never step into a church building. So how do we make Jesus famous? By bringing the Church to them.
Our vision: Taking the Church to where the people are.
We are dedicated to impacting the surrounding community by cultivating relationships and creating opportunities for the Gospel to change lives. Imagine a church filled with people who step out in faith and begin building relationships with the hurt, the sick, the poor, and the broken? We want to take them to church by being the church (Eph 2:19-22).
What our community needs is to be surrounded by authentic Jesus followers. To do this, we need to go where they go. Let them see for themselves who Christ is by getting to know us. If we are the Body of Christ, then we want to walk on this earth like Jesus did: speaking the Truth in love, healing, listening, and loving people. Our hope and prayer is that they will come to saving faith in Jesus and be baptized in His name.
While going outside of our four walls and loving the community is very important to us, we also value gathering together weekly. Hebrews 10:25 says, “And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near” (NLT). We seek to create an environment of worship and celebration through fellowship, music, serving, prayer, and sound biblical teaching.
Everything we do as a church is for this purpose: making Jesus famous by creatively helping people become His fully devoted followers. All of the decisions we make concerning our resources (volunteers, teams, finances, ministries, etc) will be for this purpose (see graph on pg. 5). If this is not the focus, the church will be divided in mind and will not be able to function well. We see the importance of unity in the church in Acts 4:32a, “Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul. . .”
“Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us.” Ephesians 3:20
We envision a community where people come to life because of the Gospel. We have a great opportunity to see Bethlehem transformed. The vision that God has given us is so much bigger than ourselves and more than we could ever imagine. We will not let our circumstances determine the results! We will not give up hope, but yes, put our faith in the only name that has the power to save: Jesus Christ.
We know that our city is not the only one in need of the Gospel and Christ’s love. For that reason, we find it incredibly important to support missionaries & missions that aid others and spread the Good News! We have been blessed by the opportunity to support missionaries who have taught English to children in other countries, fought against human trafficking & sex trafficking, and given help to those with financial needs.
Pure Word Church is governed by the Board of Trustees and Board of Overseers and led by the Spiritual Formation Team.
The Board of Trustees is responsible for the important financial decisions of the church. These include decisions about items that are outside the church budget and decisions that will be long-lasting and affect the church more seriously (e.g. purchase of a high-priced item, vehicle, facility, land, etc). This team will vote on the salaries for staff and make decisions on hiring future staff members. The ideal size is 3-5 people and will initially be chosen by Pastor Tim to later have a voting process in the future of the church.
The Board of Overseers is an outside group of pastors who are responsible for caring for Pastor Tim. They hold him accountable and are responsible to practice church discipline on Pastor Tim. They are acting elders until we appoint elders from our own church.
Spiritual Formation Team is responsible for the vision and spiritual well-being of the church. They are responsible for making decisions about the direction of the church, discussing the spiritual needs of the church and coming up with solutions to address those needs.
Pastor Tim and Melinda
Pastor Tim was born in Brazil and moved to the USA when he was 5 years old. His dad was called to pastor a small group of Portuguese-speaking people in Bethlehem, PA and later planted a church in New Jersey. Tim started preaching when he was only ten years old, following in the footsteps of his father.
He studied for one year in a Bible school in Brazil and later got his Bachelor’s of Science in Bible with a Pastoral emphasis from Cairn University. This is where God called him to plant a church.
Tim married Melinda on April 25, 2015. She was born in Allentown and grew up in a Christian home. She is passionate about helping those who don’t have a voice and seeing the Gospel reach the lost. They both own a filming business together where they film weddings and corporate videos.
